Natural Disaster Declaration Welcome

State Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr has today welcomed the declaration of the Cessnock Council area as a natural disaster zone, following days of wild weather conditions.

The Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments, will help people in areas that have experienced flooding and damage from falling trees.

Mr Barr said: “People in our region have been extremely hard hit by the recent storms and flooding. I’ve visited Weston, Abermain and South Cessnock to see the damage for myself. This is a dreadful time for a lot of people and they’ll need the support of the whole community as they try and rebuild.

“Declaring a Natural Disaster Zone is appropriate, and the financial assistance will help a great number of people who need assistance. Councils will also receive much-needed support to repair local infrastructure,” he said.

“The natural disaster relief is very welcome as our community begins the clean-up.”

“The NSW State Emergency Service and other emergency services have done a fantastic job, working tirelessly to help locals. However, I urge everyone to continue to exercise caution and heed warnings of the Police and SES.”
